Five Paper Clay Tips
By Tammy Powley, About.com Guide
After getting a few paper clay projects under my belt, I’ve started to gather some tips to remember when working with paper clay to make jewelry. Here are a few tips you might also find helpful if you decide to explore this unusual jewelry medium:
2) Since you have water, paper towels are also handy because you may have a small mess on your hands and work area. You are using your hands a lot with this medium, so expect to get a little icky.
3) Waxed paper is very helpful to roll the clay onto and to use as a way to cover your work area. Also, when the clay dries, you can also leave it on wax paper.
4) If you can’t wait for your clay to air dry, it is possible to dry it more quickly in a low temperature oven.
5) Have a zip lock bag handy to keep unused clay for a later time. This will help keep it from drying out. If your clay does seem a little dryer than the last time you used it, just re-dehydrate it with a little water.

How to Work With Paper Clay & Candy Molds
By Katharine Godbey, eHow Contributor
Paper clay is a non-toxic air-dried material made of paper and clay. After dried, it becomes hard with a smooth, porcelain-like surface that can be sanded, carved or painted. Artists and crafters alike enjoy working with paper clay for many applications from jewelry-making to creating sculptures. It works well when using molds such as candy molds. These molded paper clay pieces can be dried, painted or embellished for jewelry pendants, to dress up frames or made into faux candies. The possibilities for molded paper clay projects using candy molds are limited only by the crafter's imagination.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
- Paper clay
- Clay cutting knife
- Water
- Candy mold sheets
- Zip close plastic bag
Knead the cut portion in your hands to warm and soften it. Dampen fingers slightly if clay seems dry, but be careful not to add too much water or the clay will become sticky.
Divide some of the clay into a small ball, just enough to fit into one mold on the candy mold sheet. Press the clay ball into the mold smoothing out the back until it is flat. If there is too much clay or the clay seems dry, remove it to adjust the amount or add a little moisture to it before placing it in the mold again.
Continue to work quickly filling all the molds you wish to use. Allow the clay to dry for one day before removing from the molds. Lay the clay shapes on a flat surface and allow them to dry completely, usually two or three days depending on the thickness
How Is a Clay Roller Used?
To use a clay roller, place your clay (be it metal, polymer, or paper) on a clean, non-stick surface. For metal clay, you will also want to dab a tiny amount of olive oil onto the roller to keep it from sticking to the clay. Press the middle part of the roller down into the clay, and then roll it back and forth over the clay to flatten it.
What Should You Look for in a Clay Roller?
Consider these important points when purchasing a clay roller:
Make sure the roller is not too long or too wide; otherwise, it can be awkward to work with when rolling out small piece of clay when creating jewelry components.
Most rollers are just a few dollars, so if you work with more than one type of clay medium, you may want to purchase a few so that you can dedicate one roller for each type of clay you work with.
Set the ball of paper play onto a protected work surface. Using the rolling pin, flatten the clay so that it is about 1/8 inch thick.
Cut your selected shape out using the cookie cutter or craft knife. Set it aside. Return any unused paper clay to the package it came in or place it in a zip-lock bag. Follow the directions on the package for storage.
Stamp the rubber stamp on the clear embossing pad. Impress the image onto the paper clay shape. Do not use excessive force when stamping the image; it should be pressed just enough to leave an impression in the clay. Leave the stamp embedded in the clay for approximately a minute. The clear embossing ink will allow the stamp to be removed easily.
Set the impressed shaped clay aside. Follow the directions for drying that are on the package. Let the piece air dry or bake in a toaster oven on a very low setting. Depending on the humidity where you live, air drying could take several hours. Oven baking a piece this size depends on the type of oven used, but in general should take about half an hour. Using a spatula that is used only for crafting, flip the clay over half way through oven baking.
Sand any rough edges once the piece has finished drying or has cooled after being in the oven. Using pigment inks or acrylic paints, dry brush the clay where desired. When dry, attach to a card to it using an adhesive that isn't wet; wet glues could distort the paper clay shape.
Tips & Warnings
Paper clay dries quickly, so return it to a sealed bag when you are done with it. Add water to hydrate a piece that has lost the ability to be shaped.
Adding inks or paints to a wet piece of paper clay will cause the colors to run.
Wear gloves when adding paint or ink to wet paper clay.
Wear a face mask during sanding so you don't inhale fine particles of dust.
Any utensil used for baking paper clay should be a crafts-only utensil. Do not use a good kitchen rolling pin, cookie cutter or spatula. If possible, use a crafts-only toaster oven.

Paper clay is an art medium that has a similar look and feel to potter's clay but does not require curing in a kiln or the typical "throwing." These characteristics make it especially friendly for children. Paper clay dries "to a hard finish that can be carved or sanded--perfect for artists and crafters of all kinds," writes Paperclay.com. Use paper clay to roll out long strips and to make your own swirl clay pot.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
Package of paper clay
Acrylic craft paint
Paintbrushes
Disposable plastic gloves
Put on disposable plastic gloves, open the package of paper clay, and put into a bowl. You can add a bit of acrylic paint to the clay if you would like to tint it, or you can wait until your sculpture is finished to paint on a finish. Work your hands through the clay to soften it.
Pull the clay out of the bowl and roll it out on your workspace. Paperclayart.com suggests rolling out the clay "on a soft surface like pastry dough with a rolling pin" and gives this advice: "Remember to lift turn the slab over in between each 'roll over' with the pin to keep p'clay from sticking to the table. Roll the pin with light-medium pressure multiple times to flatten the lump gradually rather than try to compress it all the first go. It may be easier to slice off a thick bread slice from your chunk of soft clay with a wire tool to start. If you want texture try stamps like with traditional clay."
Cut the paper clay sheets in long strips with a knife. Double over one strip and roll it between your hands. Repeat this with all of the strips until all of the strips look fairly uniform. Now you are ready to make your bowl. Use a glass bowl as a base. Take one strip and wrap it around the base of the bowl. Repeat until the entire bowl is covered in coils. Smooth out the joints created from melding the strips together as you wrap the bowl.
Allow your bowl to dry, and then add embellishments. You can paint it, spray it with glitter, and even alter it. The greatest attribute of paper clay is that you don't have to wait for it to dry in a kiln, and you can work with it even after it dries.

Add this air dry clay to your sculpting materials. Easy to make, use it as a finish coat for paper mache or to sculpt small figures with minimum shrinkage.
Often overlooked as a sculpting medium, paper clay has a lot to offer. It is lightweight, strong, inexpensive, and almost immediate. Drying time varies with the temperature, humidity, and thickness. It has low toxicity, depending on the ingredients used, but definitely lower than polymer clay which gives off toxic fumes if overheated. Color the clay with acrylic paint or watercolor if desired. It can be used as a finish coat on large paper mache sculptures.
Dried paper clay has a stone like texture that is very pleasing. Once it is dried, it can be sanded smooth. If a perfectly smooth finish is desired, a thin finish coat of the drywall compound used to make the clay can be used to fill small gaps and to cover the very slight fuzziness of the paper caused by sanding. The compound adheres well because it is part of the clay. The strength and hardness of paper clay and its workability when dry make it an excellent medium for sculpture.

Using too much water will make the clay mushy and make it stick to your hands; a little water goes a long way.
Seal leftover clay in an air-tight bag to keep it from drying out.
Placing the clay shapes in a dry, warm place will speed up the drying process.
3-D molds can also be used. When using a mold that is two sided, remove the clay from the mold after shaping to allow it to dry. Set it on its bottom; do not lay it on its side or that side will become distorted.

What Is a Clay Roller?
A roller is basically a hollow plastic tube shaped device that you roll over clay as if you were rolling out dough for a pizza or pie. The are normally about 5 inches long and about 3/4 inches in diameter. The plastic is normally white, but some manufacturers often them as clear plastic, which is nice since you can see through to the material you are rolling out. You can also subtitle simple PVC pipe for a clay roller, but it is best to try to get the diameter down to the 3/4 inches that a pre-purchased roller come in since the larger diameter rollers can be a little awkward to work with. How Is a Clay Roller Used?

How to Make Paper Clay Art
By Karen Sweeny-Justice, eHow Contributor
As its name suggest, paper clay is made of a mix of clay and paper. It can be purchased in block form at craft stores or made at home. With it you can create one-of-a-kind works of art quickly and easily. Paper clay can be sculpted for ornaments, jewelry, figurines and three-dimensional pieces, or flattened for use on homemade cards. Paper clay is easily molded by hand or shaped with tools. It dries to a hard texture without the high heat of a kiln.

Paper Clay – Make Your Own Air Hardening Clay
The Uniqueness of Paper Clay
Use paper clay instead of modeling clay for a permanent sculpture. When dried, it can easily be sanded, cut, filed, drilled, or painted. Because of its structure, smoothing paper clay is different than smoothing modeling or other clay. Paper clay becomes smooth under pressure, not by smoothing the surface. Trying to smooth the surface of paper clay the same way modeling clay is smoothed only pulls the paper fibers apart. The best method for smoothing is to pat it with the heel of the hand, fingers, or a paddle tool (like potters use) to compress the clay.Dried paper clay has a stone like texture that is very pleasing.
Paper Clay Recipe
This recipe is an adaptation of the one shared by Jonni Good at Ultimate Paper Mache. She makes wonderful paper mache animals and generously shares her techniques and tips on her website. Rather than using kitchen tools, pour a measured amount of water into a paper or plastic cup, and mark the cup. Pour the water out, and use the cup to measure the ingredient. Use a different cup for each ingredient.- 1 roll of inexpensive double ply toilet paper
- 2 tablespoons of mineral oil
- 3/4 cup white glue
- 1 cup of drywall joint compound
- 1/2 cup white flour
- 1/4 cup salt to prevent mold
- Jonni Good uses Angel Soft toilet paper for this. Kirkland brand from Costco has twice as much paper by volume per roll than Angel Soft. A roll of Kirkland brand weighs 7 1/2 oz. on the kitchen scale. Separate the plies while unrolling the paper. There will be 2 piles of 1 ply paper. For the Kirkland brand, only half of the roll is used.
- Place the paper into a colander or strainer, wet it and let it sit to drain over a bowl or the sink. Squeezing the paper to remove the water makes it harder to break up the paper. Once water has stopped draining from the paper, put it in a large bowl (disposable plastic).
- Measure and add the other ingredients to the bowl. Use a plastic spackle blade to mix it all together, and break the paper into fibers.
- If the mixture is too wet, more paper can be added, or the excess water can be removed by wrapping the clay in a paper towel and squeezing the water out into the paper towel.
